UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a girl containing several personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though other scenes depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to each person."

The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
