The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was missing in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
