Apart from recognizing video games in different award categories, TGA formerly highlighted a Future Class initiative. People recognized within the Future Class cohort were intended to reflect the “optimistic, daring, and welcoming future” of gaming, akin to how other annual lists spotlight key figures. But, this initiative is coming to an end, as confirmed by event organizers.
More Than Just Recognition: The Purpose of the Program
Future Class was not just a tribute to standout individuals in the gaming industry. It functioned as a nexus for networking and career development. Although certain past members shared gratitude for their involvement with the program, others expressed that the program did not do enough for its members. Complaints was directed at various areas of Future Class, ranging from the insufficient support to be present at the show to providing no compensation for advising new members.
Recent Issues and Initiative Suspension
Future Class appeared to be paused in 2024, when TGA left out the recognition from its schedule. This omission came after a previous year dispute where a number of Future Class members endorsed a open letter encouraging the ceremony to use its platform to voice support for an international issue.
"You gave us the role of representatives of a better future — as such, our obligation towards you and all the gamers around the world compels us to voice our views," the letter stated.
The letter further contended that the video game sector frequently dehumanized certain groups, and urged creators in the industry to make changes.
Formal Announcement and Website Changes
Though this is the second year that TGA has omitted a Future Class, event organizers had not officially announced its cancellation before. The absence has been observed, partly, due to the seeming deletion of all references of Future Class on the TGA’s official site. The event’s founder and producer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
TGA 2025 are set for Dec. 11.
