Spot Gold Climbs Above $4,000 in a Historic First; Automotive Retailer Vertu Motors Alerts of £5.5m Earnings Impact from Jaguar Land Rover Disruption

Welcome, and join us for our live reporting of financial markets, the stock markets and the global economy.

Gold Reaches Record $4,000 Level

The gold price has risen beyond $4,000 an ounce for the first occasion, fueling a rally fuelled by worries over government instability in Japan, France and the US, where the government closure has dragged on.

The precious metal increased by more than one percent to $4,029.46 an ounce, yet another all-time peak, and is increased 50% so far this year. This comes after rises of twenty-seven percent last year and thirteen percent the year before.

The precious metal is considered a protective asset in economic instability, and also acted as a buffer against increasing prices.

Financial Sentiment and Market Comments

Hedge fund investor a market expert likened the present time to the 1970s era when high inflation and elevated national debt and expenditure weakened trust in different holdings.

It is comparable to the early ’70s ... how do you allocate your money?
Gold provides excellent diversification in the asset allocation. If you look at it just from a long-term investment strategy standpoint, you would perhaps have something like fifteen percent of your investments in gold … because it is an investment that performs strongly when the standard elements of the investment go down.

Investors’ appetite for gold investments seems persistent. Investors have been flocking to gold ETFs with capital entering hitting $64bn so far this year, as reported by the World Gold Council, with a record $17.3bn in the previous month. National banks have also been adding to reserves.

Reasons Explaining the Gold Rally

Expectations of additional Federal Reserve easing, worries over geopolitical and economic uncertainty, trade tariffs and an AI bubble, along with a declining US currency have propelled the gold rally.

Ewa Manthey, investment analyst at a banking group, said:

Gold has undergone a record surge, rising by 100% in less than two years, fueled by reserve accumulation as it diversifies away from the American currency, the US President’s aggressive trade policy and disputes in the Middle East and Ukraine.
Moving forward, national banks are acquiring more – the People’s Bank of China extended its purchasing run in the previous month for an 11th consecutive month notwithstanding historic levels – Trump’s trade war is continuing, global uncertainties are high, and ETF holdings continue to expand while expectations of further easing intensify. All of this indicates that gold has additional upside.

Car Retailer Warns of Earnings Hit

The UK automotive retailer Vertu Motors has alerted to a £5.5 million hit to its yearly earnings from “significant disruption” to its luxury carmaker retail outlets after the car company halted manufacturing for several weeks following a major security breach.

The company’s CEO the leader said it was an unfortunate situation to undergo operational challenges across the JLR network” during the previous month, a key month for car sales as number plates are refreshed.

Although the circumstances are changing, it looks to be resolving in recent days.

The company, which is located in near Newcastle, reported peak six-month turnover of over two and a half billion pounds for the six months to the close of August, increased from £2.47bn a year earlier. Adjusted pre-tax profit declined by ten percent to twenty million pounds.
