Prison Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars
He fought the legal system and the legal system triumphed.
A couple of months after receiving a quarter-century plus sentence for attempting to “annihilate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro finally looks jail-bound.
Expected Incarceration
The convicted plotter – who has been living under house arrest in his residence while a number of legal procedures and challenges proceed – is widely expected to be imprisoned in the next few days, amidst growing rumors that he will be transferred to a notorious high-security prison.
Previous Remarks on Prisoners
Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the far-right ex- soldier displayed little sympathy for the country's jailed individuals.
“Why should we provide those lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They deserve to be fucked, period. That’s what I reckon.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to wind up in prison, all you have to do is not sexual assault, abduction or rob.”
Prison Location Discussion
But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has appalled supporters, a group of four this week visited the complex in an seeming attempt to prevent the judiciary from sending him there.
The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, said he predicted the septuagenarian figure to be jailed in the following week and a half and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.
The senator argued Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal issues – the consequence of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 election race – implied it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is extremely serious. He cannot to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It could be dreadful,” he added, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the standard of inmate food.
While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells accommodating 40 detainees: “That is virtually one meter squared per detainee.
“We conversed to the convicts and they complain, unsurprisingly, of the horrible cuisine,” continued the senator.
Allies React
He is not the sole person voicing opinions before the one-time head of state's anticipated detention.
Authoring in a leading publication, another ally, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and alleged Brazil was about to see “the greatest political injustice in its past”.
“It is an injustice that eats away the spirits of countless Brazilian citizens,” the former minister said.
Mixed Public Response
This could be correct due to the substantial support Bolsonaro retains on the Brazilian right. Yet his predicted jailing has also warmed the hearts of numerous other people who believe he ought to be imprisoned for conspiring to block the incoming president from becoming president – and also scheming to have him assassinated.
Reimont Otoni, a representative for the sitting leader's political party, said: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. No one desires Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to obtain dignified treatment – but proper care while incarcerated. He must not continue being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years celebrating the severe handling of convicts, had abruptly realized to their entitlements. “Recently has the far-right – which has repeatedly claimed that civil liberties are not for offenders – chosen to visit a jail to discover what circumstances are truly like,” he stated.
“Bolsonaro is a offender,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “shameful, degrading handling”.
Possible Incarceration Conditions
In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently houses about fourteen thousand prisoners, his more likely destination seems to be a adjacent prison for law enforcement and other “special” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
His potential cell are considerably more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although still a distant from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while occupying the impressive official residence, approximately a short distance away.
According to reports, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha measures about 260 square feet – roughly the area of two parking spaces – and includes a 12 square meter restroom with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre terrace. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and also a cooler in his room as long as they were donated by his family,” sources suggested.
Political Comments
He denounced the rumoured idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the judicial authority who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his fate in the {
