NY Introduces Portal for Citizens to Report Immigration Videos Following Detentions of 4 US Citizens

New York state AG has introduced a recent online portal asking locals to provide visual evidence of immigration raids across the state. This step comes just a shortly after a high-profile enforcement action disrupted NYC's Chinatown, triggering large-scale protests.

US Citizens Detained In Raid

A congressional representative announced during a news conference that four American citizens were arrested and detained for "about 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations occurred in NYC on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"All New York residents deserves to reside free from terror," the attorney general stated in a statement.

"Anyone who observed and documented ICE activity yesterday, I encourage you to share that evidence with my office. We are dedicated to examining these submissions and investigating any wrongdoings."

Portal Features

The platform provides options to submit images and video footage of the operation, along with a field to specify where it occurred. When submitting, users must tick a option that confirms that "authorities might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, such as in a lawsuit or public report."

Information about the ICE Action

The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say involved dozens of government officers, occurred in a popular district of Manhattan where fake products and merchandise are commonly traded widely – typically to visitors.

Videos of the operation show several masked and armed personnel restraining and arresting a person, and pushing back onlookers. Crowds of locals followed the officers down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was also seen traveling down the city streets.

Political Response

At a news conference held with the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democratic representative, announced that four American citizens were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where US citizens should be detained for unjustly." He said the individuals were released on Wednesday with no accusations made.

"The goal is evident here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," the congressman said. "This represents a militarized effort to create conflict. It is purely a justification to provoke conflict for the government to deploy the military to halt unrest that they initiated."

Widespread Condemnation

Anger over the ICE raid rapidly grew – all three political contenders criticized the operation, including NY's governor.

"Once again, the federal government opts for heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a political candidate declared.

The city's community groups expressed outrage also.

"ICE descended on Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, masked agents and protective equipment to go after local sellers trying to make a living. This operation had no relation to public safety and was entirely about frightening communities and areas," stated the president of a major immigrant coalition.

Official Guidelines

ICE policy bans the arrest of American nationals and the agency has stated it refrains from apprehend citizens. However, independent reporting has revealed that over 170 American nationals have been held against their will by ICE since the beginning of the current administration.

Current Situation

ICE raids have been rising in frequency in New York and nationwide recently.

A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an housing center of the present government. Rallies opposing federal operations are ubiquitous along with accusations of aggression and abusive practices.

Recently, a submission provided by civil rights groups alleged healthcare failures of pregnant women in government custody.
