New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD issued surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning near the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
