Music Legend Barry Manilow to Undergo Surgery for Cancer in His Lung.
Barry Manilow announced that he was diagnosed with a cancerous growth in his lung and will undergo a surgical procedure.
Early-Stage Diagnosis
The legendary 82-year-old artist, famous for his series of beloved anthems from "Mandy" has made him one of pop musicās most beloved showmen, will have surgery to take out a section of lung tissue in an effort to combat the illness, which is detected early.
āAs many of you know, I recently suffered from six weeks of a bronchial infection followed by a relapse of another five weeks.
āEven though I was past the infection and returned to the spotlight for my residency, my excellent physician requested an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK.
āThe MRI discovered a tumor on my left side that needs to be removed. Itās incredible chance (and a great doctor) that it was caught so early.ā
Concert Delays
He has rescheduled a number of planned shows, but suggested he would be back on stage by mid-February for his enduring engagement in Las Vegas.
He added: āThe physicians do not believe it has metastasized and Iām having examinations to confirm their diagnosis. So, thatās it. No chemotherapy. No radiation. Just rest and recuperation and classic TV.
āIām looking forward to until I return to my home away from home at the Westgate Las Vegas for our Valentineās weekend concerts.ā
Professional and Personal Journey
Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a concert series at the Westgate Las Vegas. The singer has enjoyed a career spanning many years in the limelight and publicly identified as gay in 2017, after marrying his longtime partner and manager in secret in 2014.
The pair were in a clandestine romance for over 35 years. Last year, Manilow spoke about how important his husband had been to him during his rise to peak fame in the 1970s.
āAs my career exploded, it was just crazy. And, you know, coming home to an vacant room, you can get into a lot of problems if you, you know, youāre alone evening after evening,ā he said.
āBut I met Garry right around when it was blowing up. And I didnāt have to go back to those isolated suites. I had a person to be vulnerable with or to enjoy success with.
āI desire that newcomers today donāt have to go back to those hotel rooms by themselves, because you can make poor choices. I never did. But it was very solitary until I met Garry. And then it was fun.ā
