Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Figure, Dies at Eighty-One Years Old

Global audiences grieves the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and performer whose distinctive vocal talent played a key role in popularizing reggae music worldwide. The artist has died at the age of eighty-one.

“With deep sorrow that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa Chambers on social media. “I am grateful for his loved ones, close friends, fellow artists and colleagues who shared his journey. To all his fans around the world, please know that your support was his motivation during his entire professional life … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” Her post was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff gained fame for hit songs such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat sound and uplifting spirit earned him a vast and longstanding fanbase.

In addition to his musical achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come, a performance that received critical praise and is considered a landmark of film in Jamaica.

Jimmy Cliff was one of just a handful of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
