Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, a senior official said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
