Fury Erupts as Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Rebuke
Personalities from across the political aisle and the Hollywood world are uniting to censure former President Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Social Media Post
After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". The post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, relentless, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Detention
Authorities have since announced the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the case. It is reported his bond was set at a significant amount.
A Torrent of Criticism from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
This is a appalling and despicable statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also criticized the statements. She referenced prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Do you have no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a sick man."
Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Criticism from Within Political Ranks
Some Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". Greene also alluded to challenges with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged members in his political party to justify the comments.
Reiner's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation following the killing of another individual.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a element of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
