Cameron Norrie earned the biggest win of his career by rallying from a lost first set to defeat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had before beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this win marks Norrie's initial win over a reigning world top-ranked player.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who is now the fifth British man in history to beat a top-ranked player. "Returning from injury last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualifiers here. I just aimed to embrace my tennis in the latter part of the year. To secure a triumph like this, it's the most significant win of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the global number one and likely the strongest player in the world right now."

Norrie, seeded 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive premier event successes, which was the top run of performances in the Spanish star's developing professional path.

Contest Analysis

The top seed looked to be progressing easily towards victory early on as he eased past the first set. Yet, Norrie slowly fought his way back into the game by delivering with greater precision and engaging the Spaniard into prolonged, physical rallies. His persistent shot tolerance and consistency slowly made an impact.

During large parts of the battle, the world number one served well but he had difficulty to get his timing right on his baseline shots. The rising talent looked notably struggling striking his primary weapon, which has been the top weapon in the sport for a large part of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand unforced errors and a overall of 54 unforced errors. Opposing him, Norrie gave Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, maintaining his steadiness, physicality and power all match while performing well on serve and choosing his moments to move into the court and play aggressively.
