An intense cold spell has seized a bitter and extended period of frigid weather, with readings persisting in the minus 20 to minus 40 Celsius range for weeks. On Tuesday, Braeburn in the Yukon recorded -55.7C, marking its chilliest December reading in nearly five decades.
Enduring Chill Below -40C
Meanwhile, Mayo and Dawson endured over two straight weeks of nights below -40C, with Mayo experiencing a low of -50.4C earlier this week. Whitehorse also recorded 10 nights when the cold dipped under -30 Celsius.
The bitter chill extended its reach south over the festive period. In Edmonton, the Christmas overnight low dipped under -28 degrees Celsius.
December 26th was anticipated to usher in readings no higher than -20 Celsius across many regions, including Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa and Quebec.
Forecast to Persist Through Early January
The frigid conditions are predicted to linger into the new year. Authorities have cautioned about potential power failures in the Yukon soon, as its energy infrastructure faces unprecedented demand from peak power usage levels.
The lengthy cold snap originates from a stationary polar vortex over Canada for much of December, allowing bitter Arctic air to spill south. Next week, the cold air mass is expected to retreat north gradually, enabling milder Pacific air to move across the US and into parts of southern Canada.
Pronounced Disparity with US Warmth
In stark contrast, parts of the US experienced their warmest Christmas Day on record as readings skyrocketed 15 to 30 degrees Celsius above normal. In many areas, conditions felt more typical of April or May instead of the heart of winter.
Several states set Christmas Day temperature records. The capital of Oklahoma soared to 25C on Christmas Day, surpassing the previous peak of 22C set in 1982. Cities including Austin and Dallas, in Texas, and Charlotte, North Carolina also logged readings above 25 degrees Celsius.
High-Pressure System Fuels Warmth
Warmer-than-normal conditions are forecast to last through Boxing Day and the days ahead, with abnormal warmth projected to move across the southeastern US in the coming days.
The unseasonable temperatures are powered by a robust atmospheric ridge extending from the desert south-west towards the north and east, which generates a heat-dome phenomenon. This pattern establishes a broad area of high pressure across much of the continent, trapping warm air near the surface. As air sinks through the atmosphere, it compresses and heats further, enabling abnormally high temperatures to develop.
