Afghan Rulers Utilized Abandoned British Equipment to Locate Afghans That Served With Western Troops, Investigation Learns

A whistleblower has told a parliamentary probe that British authorities abandoned sensitive devices permitting the militant group to track down local individuals who collaborated with international military.

Data Breach Endangers Thousands in Danger

Person A, known as Person A, testified that people concerned by the security lapse were advised to relocate and switch their phone numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.

MPs are investigating the UK government's response of a massive breach of personal details concerning approximately 19k individuals who had applied to move to the United Kingdom to flee militant rule.

Data Disclosure Was Discovered

An electronic document with private information, such as names, phone numbers and occasionally relative details, was accidentally leaked by a staff member working at British military command in February 2022.

The leak was discovered only in August 2023, when the names of multiple applicants who had applied to move to the UK surfaced on Facebook.

Regime's Resources

“There seems to be a false assumption that Afghan rulers are without the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” Person A informed the committee.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. If they have a contact number, they are able to track your exact position. That's precisely what intelligence groups accomplished.”

Under inquiry about if militant forces had access to necessary encryption, the whistleblower confirmed: “They have complete capability.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Early investigations provided to the investigation estimated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of people concerned by the breach had been executed.

A legal restriction concerning the leak was implemented in late 2023 and prevented any information concerning it from being made public until mid-2025.

Safety Measures

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with told individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they relocate when possible and switched their contact details. That constituted the two main details that, should militant forces obtained such data, would result in them being traced,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower argued that internal investigation carried out by an ex-government employee had been wrong to state that the possession of the records by the regime was “minimally impact current risk levels”.

“The important fact is that affected people are not confronting the Taliban; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

Person A described horrific violence endured by at-risk Afghans, comprising electrocution, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.

“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to pressure relatives to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
