A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life without fear.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – originating from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The trend became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted the pig's pardon.
